Crop tight
Fill the square with the subject. Background detail disappears at small sizes.
Pick high contrast
A bright subject on a darker background, or the reverse, stays recognizable in a browser tab.
Avoid small text
Words in a photo become unreadable at 16 or 32 pixels.

What size will the ICO be?
The converter fits larger images inside 256 × 256 pixels, keeping their proportions, and stores the icon as PNG data inside the .ico. A square crop gives a full 256 × 256 icon; a rectangular photo gives a rectangle that systems may pad or squeeze. Images that are already smaller than 256 pixels keep their size.

Can a JPG icon have a transparent background?
No. A JPG has no transparent pixels, so the icon keeps the photo's background. To get a round or cut-out icon, remove the background first with the background remover, download the transparent PNG, and convert it on the PNG to ICO page.

Is my image safe?
The JPG is uploaded over an encrypted connection and converted on Convertola's server. The converted file is deleted automatically after 15 minutes. ICO files cannot store metadata, so camera and location data are not kept.

The .ico holds one image up to 256 × 256 pixels, not a set of sizes. One JPG at a time, up to 10 MB. Other formats work in the main image converter.
