An ICO file is the classic icon format used by Windows and by the favicon.ico file that browsers look for on a website. This PNG to ICO converter turns a transparent PNG into an icon in one step. It is a good fit for a site favicon, a folder or shortcut icon, or a small app. Starting from a photo instead? Use JPG to ICO.
How it works
How do I convert PNG to ICO?

Click Choose a PNG image or drop the .png file onto the converter.
Keep ICO as the output format.
Use Crop to make the image square, so the icon is not squeezed.
Click Download to save the .ico file.
Good to know
What size should a favicon or icon be?
Icons are square. The converter fits larger images inside 256 × 256 pixels, the largest standard ICO size, and stores the icon as PNG data inside the .ico. Browsers and Windows scale it down for tabs, bookmarks and taskbars. For the cleanest result:
- Start from a square PNG of at least 256 pixels.
- Use Crop to remove empty margins so the logo fills the square.
- Keep the design simple: thin text becomes unreadable at 16 or 32 pixels.
How it works
How do I add the favicon to my website?
Upload the file as favicon.ico to the root of your site, or reference it in the page head with a link tag of rel="icon". Most site builders and content systems also have a favicon or "site icon" setting where you can upload the .ico. Browsers cache favicons, so a new icon can take a while to appear; a hard refresh helps.
Good to know
Does the ICO keep transparency?

Yes. Because the icon stores PNG data, transparent and semi-transparent pixels stay intact, so a round logo shows without a box around it.
Good to know
Is my image safe?

The PNG is uploaded over an encrypted connection and converted on Convertola's server. The converted file is deleted automatically after 15 minutes. ICO files cannot store metadata, so none is kept.
Limits
Limits of the PNG to ICO page
The .ico contains one image, up to 256 × 256 pixels; it does not bundle several sizes in one file. One PNG at a time, up to 10 MB. Other formats work in the main image converter.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about PNG to ICO
Is the PNG to ICO converter free?
Yes. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
What size is the ICO file?
Images larger than 256 pixels are scaled to fit inside 256 × 256, keeping their proportions. Smaller images keep their size.
Will my PNG transparency be kept?
Yes. The icon stores the image as PNG, alpha channel included.
Can I use the ICO as a favicon?
Yes. Save it as favicon.ico in your site root or upload it in your site's icon setting.
Does the ICO include 16, 32 and 48 px sizes?
No. It holds a single image; browsers and Windows scale it down as needed.
How do I make a non-square logo square?
Use Crop with a square selection before converting, or add padding in an editor first.
