Removing a background used to mean tracing the edge of a subject by hand in a photo editor. Today an AI model does that in seconds, in a web page or in the tools already on your phone and computer. This guide explains how a background remover works, how to use one online and on iPhone, Android, Windows, and Mac, which photos give the cleanest cutout, and how to keep the transparency once you have it.

What does a background remover do?

A background remover separates the main subject of a photo, such as a person, a pet, or a product, from everything behind it and deletes the background. What's left is a cutout: the subject on a transparent area that lets any color, slide, or web page show through.

To store that empty area, the file needs an alpha channel, which records how opaque each pixel is. PNG and WebP have one, GIF only supports pixels that are fully transparent or fully opaque, and JPG has none. That's why a background remover gives you a PNG.

Alpha isn't just on or off. Edge pixels can be partly transparent, which is what lets a strand of hair or a soft shadow blend into a new background instead of showing a hard, jagged outline.

How does an AI background remover work?

Modern background removers use a segmentation model: a neural network trained on many labeled photos to decide, pixel by pixel, what belongs to the foreground. The model produces a mask, a grayscale map where white is the subject and black is the background, and the tool applies that mask to your original photo as its alpha channel.

There are two ways a website can run that model:

  • On a server. The site uploads your photo, runs the model on its own computers, and sends back the result. Most services with accounts or credits work this way.
  • In your browser. The site sends the model to your device and the cutout happens there, so the photo isn't uploaded. Convertola's background remover works this way, using IMG.LY's open-source background removal library with an ISNet segmentation model.

The in-browser approach is the more private one. The trade-off is the first run: the browser has to download the model, about 56 MB, before it can cut out your first photo. After that it's cached, so the next photos start much faster.

How to remove a background online

  1. Open the background remover.
  2. Choose or drop your photo. JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and BMP are accepted, up to 10 MB.
  3. Wait for the cutout. The first time, the page also downloads the cutout engine.
  4. Check the preview, then click Download. The file is a PNG named after your photo, ending in `-transparent.png`.

The PNG keeps the same width and height as the photo you chose, and there's no watermark or sign-up. An animated GIF is read from its first frame only. Download the PNG before you close the tab: it exists only in your browser until you save it.

How to remove a background on iPhone, Android, Windows, and Mac

The online background remover works the same way in Safari, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox on any of these devices. Several systems also have a built-in option.

On iPhone or iPad

In the browser: open the background remover in Safari, tap the box, and choose a photo from your library or the Files app. Safari saves the PNG to Files > Downloads.

Built in: in the Photos app, touch and hold the subject of a photo until it lights up, then tap Copy or Share. Apple calls this lifting a subject from the background, and it needs iOS 16 or later. It's handy for pasting a cutout straight into another app.

On Android

In the browser: open the background remover in Chrome, tap the box, and pick the photo from your gallery or files. The PNG is saved to your Download folder.

Built in: some recent phones, including many Samsung Galaxy models, let you touch and hold the subject in the Gallery app to copy or save it as a separate image. The option and its name depend on the brand and Android version.

On Windows

In the browser: drag the photo from File Explorer onto the background remover and download the PNG.

Built in: recent versions of Paint in Windows 11 have a Remove background button in the Image section of the toolbar. Open the photo in Paint, click it, and save the result as a PNG; saving as JPEG brings back a solid background.

On Mac

In the browser: drag the photo from Finder onto the background remover and download the PNG.

Built in: on recent versions of macOS, you can open the photo in Preview and choose Tools > Remove Background, or Control-click the file in Finder and choose Quick Actions > Remove Background. Both save a new image with a transparent background.

Built-in tools are fast for a quick copy and paste. A browser-based background remover gives you the same result on every device and always hands you a PNG file you can keep and reuse.

Which photos give the cleanest cutout?

Works wellCan go wrong
One clear subject: a person, pet, or productSeveral overlapping people or objects
Good light and contrast with the backgroundA subject the same color as the background
Sharp focus on the edgesBlurry or dark photos
Some space between the subject and the frameA subject cut off by the edge of the photo
Solid objects with a defined edgeGlass, smoke, fine or frizzy hair

If you're taking the photo yourself, a few habits make a big difference:

  • Step away from the wall. A little distance between the subject and the background helps the model tell them apart.
  • Use a plain background that contrasts with the subject, such as a light wall behind a dark product.
  • Use even light. Hard shadows can be mistaken for part of the outline.
  • Focus on the subject. Sharp edges cut out more cleanly than soft ones.
  • Leave a margin around the subject so nothing touches the edge of the frame.

How to fix a cutout that isn't quite right

Automatic cutouts are reliable on simple photos but can leave bits of background or clip part of the subject. Before you give up, try these steps in order:

  1. Try another shot of the same scene with more contrast or better light. It's usually the fastest fix.
  2. Crop the photo first so the subject fills more of the frame. You can crop with the image converter or your phone's editor. Less background means fewer chances for mistakes.
  3. Touch up the edges in an editor that has an eraser or a mask. Open the PNG, erase what's left of the background, and save it as a PNG again.

Why does my transparent PNG show a white or black background?

  • It was saved or converted to JPG. JPG has no transparency, so the empty area is filled with a color. Keep the file as PNG or WebP.
  • The viewer draws a background. Many photo viewers and chat previews show transparency as white or black. Insert the PNG into a document with a colored page to check it.
  • A chat app recompressed it. Many messaging apps convert photos to JPG. Send the PNG as a file or document instead.
  • It's a screenshot. A screenshot is never transparent; it captures whatever was on screen. Always use the downloaded file.

The gray-and-white checkerboard you see in some editors is how they show transparency. It isn't part of the image. If a downloaded image still shows the checkerboard everywhere you open it, the checkerboard was drawn into the pixels and the image isn't really transparent.

How to change the format or size without losing transparency

Output formatKeeps transparency?Best for
PNGYesEditing, logos, cutouts
WebPYesWebsites and online stores, smaller files
ICOYesFavicons and app icons
GIFOnly fully on or offSimple graphics
JPGNoPhotos with a solid background

The image converter can turn the PNG into WebP or ICO and keep the transparency, and it can resize, crop, or rotate it to the size a store or profile asks for. Unlike the background remover, the image converter processes files on Convertola's server: the image is uploaded for the conversion and deleted automatically after 15 minutes.

Resize after the cutout, not before. The background remover keeps your photo's original dimensions, so starting from the full-size photo keeps the most detail in the cutout.

How to put the cutout on a new background

To place the subject on white, a brand color, or another photo, open the transparent PNG in any slide, document, design, or photo editor and put a shape, a color fill, or a second image on a layer behind it. Because the edges keep their partial transparency, the cutout blends into light and dark backgrounds alike.

For a product listing that needs a white background and a JPG file, add the white layer first and then export as JPG. That way you decide the color, instead of letting the conversion pick one for you.

Common uses for a photo with no background

  • Product photos for an online store, a marketplace listing, or a catalog, on a clean white or colored background.
  • Profile pictures and headshots on a solid color for LinkedIn, a resume, or a team page.
  • Slides and documents, so a person or object sits on the page without a white box around it.
  • Thumbnails and social posts, with the cutout layered over text and color.
  • Stickers for chat apps that accept PNG.

If the photo shows someone else, ask for their permission before you publish an edited version.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free background remover?

The best one is the tool that cuts out your subject cleanly, with no watermark, sign-up, or upload if privacy matters to you. Try two or three on the same photo and compare the edges. Convertola's background remover is free, runs in your browser, and downloads a full-size transparent PNG.

Can I remove a background without uploading my photo?

Yes. An in-browser background remover runs the AI model on your own device. The model downloads once; your photo never leaves the browser. The built-in tools on iPhone, Mac, and Windows Paint also work on your device.

Which format has a transparent background?

PNG and WebP support full transparency with soft edges. GIF supports only fully transparent or fully opaque pixels. JPG doesn't support transparency at all.

Can I convert the transparent PNG to JPG?

Yes, but you'll lose the transparency: the empty area becomes a solid color. Use WebP if you need a smaller file that stays transparent.

Why is the first cutout slower?

Because the page downloads the cutout engine, about 56 MB, before it can process the first photo. Your browser caches it, so later photos start faster.

Can I remove the background from a video?

Not with an image background remover. It works on still images, and an animated GIF is read from its first frame.

Does removing the background reduce the image quality?

No. The subject's pixels aren't recompressed and the PNG keeps the photo's width and height. Only the background pixels become transparent.
