Quick answer: iPhone has no built-in "save as MP3" option, but you don't need an app. Open a browser-based converter in Safari, pick the file from Photos or Files, choose a bitrate (128 kbps for voice, 192 kbps for music) and download the MP3. Safari usually saves it in the Downloads folder of the Files app.

This guide covers which iPhone files you can convert, the exact steps for videos and voice memos, which bitrate to choose and what limits to expect.

Can you convert files to MP3 on an iPhone without an app?

Yes. iOS doesn't have a menu that exports a video or a recording as MP3. A converter that runs in the browser does the job instead. Convertola's MP3 converter runs inside Safari: the page downloads its conversion engine, but your file is not uploaded. It is processed on the iPhone itself.

What you need:

  • A recent version of iOS and Safari (or another current browser that supports WebAssembly).
  • The file saved on the iPhone, in Photos or in the Files app.
  • Enough free memory for the file. Very long videos are easier to convert on a computer.

Which iPhone files can you convert to MP3?

These are the files people most often want as MP3, and the page to use for each one:

What you haveUsual formatPage to use
A video from the Camera appMOV (sometimes MP4 after sharing or editing)MOV to MP3 or MP4 to MP3
A Voice Memos recordingM4A (the default when you export)M4A to MP3
A screen recordingVideo file in Photos; check the extensionVideo to MP3
A WhatsApp voice note saved to FilesOPUS (sometimes OGG)OPUS to MP3
A WAV, FLAC or AAC file in FilesWAV, FLAC, AACAudio to MP3

Convertola accepts MP4, MOV, WEBM, MKV, MPEG/MPG, M4A, AAC, WAV, FLAC, OGG, OPUS and MP3 files up to 150 MB, one file at a time. If you're not sure of the format, use the general MP3 converter, which accepts all of them.

How do you convert a video to MP3 on iPhone?

  1. Open Video to MP3 in Safari.
  2. Tap the file area. iOS offers the Photo Library, the camera or Browse/Choose File. Pick your video.
  3. Choose the bitrate: 192 kbps (the default) for music or mixed audio, 128 kbps for speech.
  4. Tap Convert to MP3 and keep the page open until the progress bar finishes.
  5. Tap Download MP3. Safari saves the file to its download location, usually Files > Downloads.

If the Photo Library option gives an error, save the video to Files first (open it in Photos, tap Share, then Save to Files) and pick it with Browse. Convertola keeps the first audio track of the video.

How do you convert a Voice Memo to MP3?

Voice Memos keeps recordings inside the app, so export the file first. Apple's instructions say a recording is exported as an .m4a file by default.

  1. Open Voice Memos, tap the recording, tap the More button (three dots) and choose Share.
  2. Scroll down, tap Save to Files and choose a folder.
  3. Open M4A to MP3 in Safari and pick the file with Browse.
  4. Choose 128 kbps. That's enough for speech and keeps the file small.
  5. Convert, then download the MP3.

Which bitrate should you use on iPhone?

UseBitrateSize of 1 minute
Voice memos, lectures, interviews128 kbpsabout 0.96 MB
Music, videos with music192 kbps (default)about 1.44 MB
Music from a WAV or FLAC file256–320 kbpsabout 1.9–2.4 MB

These sizes come from our own test: one minute of CD-quality audio encoded at each bitrate. A higher bitrate won't improve a source that is already compressed, such as an M4A voice memo. It only makes the file bigger. The MP3 bitrate guide explains why.

What limits should you expect on an iPhone?

  • 150 MB per file. iPhone video uses tens of megabytes per minute, so a few minutes of 4K or 1080p footage can reach the limit. For long videos, use a computer. See convert to MP3 on a Mac.
  • One file at a time. Convert, download, then pick the next one.
  • Keep Safari in front. If you switch apps or lock the screen during a long conversion, iOS may pause the tab.
  • Memory. Older iPhones with little free memory can stop on very large files. Close other tabs and try again.
  • Protected files. Apple Music downloads and old protected iTunes purchases can't be converted.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a video to MP3 on iPhone without an app?

Yes. Open a browser-based converter such as Convertola in Safari, choose the video from Photos or Files, pick a bitrate and download the MP3. Nothing needs to be installed.

Where does the MP3 go after downloading on iPhone?

Safari saves downloads to its download location, usually the Downloads folder in the Files app. Open Files, tap Browse and look in Downloads.

Is my video uploaded when I convert it?

Not on Convertola. The MP3 converter runs in Safari. The page downloads the conversion engine, and your file is processed on the iPhone and isn't sent to a server.

Can I convert Apple Music songs to MP3 on iPhone?

No. Songs from the Apple Music subscription are protected, and Convertola only converts unprotected files you already have, such as your videos, voice memos and audio files.
