Android phones record and save media in many different formats, depending on the manufacturer and the app. A video from the camera, a screen recording, a voice recorder file and a voice note from a messaging app can all end up with different extensions. This guide shows how to find the file, which converter page to use for each type, the exact steps in the browser, which bitrate to choose, where the MP3 is saved and how to fix the most common problems.

Do you need an app to convert to MP3 on Android?

No. A converter app is useful if you convert many files every day, but for occasional files the browser is enough and keeps your phone free of extra apps and permissions. Convertola's MP3 converter runs in the browser: the page downloads its conversion engine, and your file isn't uploaded. The audio is processed on the phone itself.

If you do install an app, check the permissions it asks for. A converter needs access to the files you choose, but it doesn't need your contacts, location, call log or SMS. Read recent reviews for complaints about aggressive ads or surprise subscriptions, and install only from the Google Play Store.

Browser or app: what to choose

  • A file now and then: the browser. Nothing to install, and nothing left behind.
  • Private recordings: a browser converter that doesn't upload the file, or an app you trust that works on the device.
  • Many files every day, or files over 150 MB: a computer with desktop software is usually easier than a phone app.

Which Android files can you convert?

Android phones and apps save files in different formats depending on the manufacturer. Check the file extension in your file manager:

File on your phoneCommon extensionPage to use
Camera video.mp4MP4 to MP3
Screen recording.mp4 (varies)Video to MP3
Voice recorder audio.m4a, .aac, .ogg, .opus or .wav (varies by app)Audio to MP3
Voice note from a messaging app.opus (sometimes .ogg)OPUS to MP3
Video recorded in a browser or web app.webmWEBM to MP3
Music file from a computer.wav, .flac, .m4aAudio to MP3

Convertola accepts MP4, MOV, WEBM, MKV, MPEG/MPG, M4A, AAC, WAV, FLAC, OGG, OPUS and MP3 up to 150 MB. AMR and 3GP files aren't supported. If your recorder app saves AMR or 3GP, check its settings for an M4A or AAC option before you record.

How do you find a file and its extension on Android?

Open your phone's file manager. On many phones it's called Files (Files by Google) or My Files (on Samsung Galaxy phones). Look in these folders first:

  • DCIM > Camera for videos from the camera app.
  • Movies or DCIM > Screen recordings for screen recordings, depending on the phone.
  • Recordings, Music or a folder named after the recorder app for voice recordings.
  • Download for files you saved from the browser, email or chat.

Tap the three-dot menu on a file and choose Info or Details to see the full name with its extension. If the file manager hides extensions, the details screen usually shows the file type.

How do you convert a video to MP3 on Android?

  1. Open Video to MP3 in Chrome or another current browser.
  2. Tap the file area and pick the video from your gallery or file manager.
  3. Choose 192 kbps (default) for music, or 128 kbps for speech.
  4. Tap Convert to MP3 and keep the screen on until the progress bar finishes.
  5. Tap Download MP3. Open your Files app and look in Downloads.

Convertola keeps the first audio track of the video. If you know the video is MP4, the MP4 to MP3 page works the same way.

When you tap the file area, Android shows a picker. It may open your recent files, the photo gallery or a full file browser. Any of them works. If you can't see the video in the gallery view, open the menu in the picker and choose Browse or your file manager, then go to the folder where the file is saved.

What if the video is in Google Photos only?

If your video is backed up to Google Photos and no longer stored on the phone, the picker may still show it but has to download it first. That needs a connection and can take a moment. If it doesn't work, open the video in Google Photos and use its download or save option so a copy is stored on the device, then pick that copy.

How do you convert a voice recording to MP3 on Android?

  1. Find the recording in your recorder app and use its Share or Save option to store it as a file, or locate it in your file manager.
  2. Open Audio to MP3 in the browser and choose the file.
  3. Pick 128 kbps. That's enough for voice and keeps the file small (about 0.96 MB per minute).
  4. Convert and download.

Some recorder apps keep recordings inside the app and only give you a file when you share or export. If you can't find the recording in your file manager, open the recorder, choose the recording and look for Share, Export or Save to device. Saving it to the Downloads folder makes it easy to pick in the browser.

How do you convert a voice note from a messaging app?

Voice notes from messaging apps are usually saved as OPUS audio, which is efficient for speech but doesn't play everywhere. To convert one:

  1. In the chat, touch and hold the voice note and use the Share or Forward option to send it to your file manager or save it to the device. The exact wording depends on the app.
  2. Open OPUS to MP3 in the browser and choose the saved file.
  3. Pick 128 kbps. Voice notes are short and recorded at a low bitrate, so higher settings only make the file bigger.
  4. Convert and download.

Only convert voice notes you have the right to keep and share. A voice note often contains private conversation.

What limits should you know about?

  • 150 MB per file. Phone videos use a lot of space per minute, so long recordings can exceed it. Use a computer for those.
  • One file at a time. Download each MP3 before you start the next.
  • Memory. Phones with little free RAM may stop on large files. Close other tabs and apps.
  • Keep the tab open. Switching apps during a long conversion can pause the browser.
  • First load. The conversion engine downloads when you first use the page, so the first conversion needs a stable connection.

Which bitrate should you pick?

ContentBitrateSize per minute
Voice notes, lectures, calls you recorded128 kbpsabout 0.96 MB
Music, videos with music192 kbpsabout 1.44 MB
Music from WAV or FLAC256–320 kbpsabout 1.9–2.4 MB

The sizes are simple arithmetic: kilobits per second times 60, divided by 8. The bitrate controls the size, not the length of the video or its resolution. A higher bitrate can't add quality that isn't in the original, so for phone recordings that are already compressed, 128 or 192 kbps is usually right. The MP3 bitrate guide explains when a higher bitrate helps and when it only makes the file bigger.

Where are MP3 files saved on Android?

Chrome saves downloads to the Download folder on your phone's internal storage. To find the MP3:

  1. Open Chrome, tap the three-dot menu and choose Downloads. The MP3 appears at the top of the list.
  2. Or open your Files or My Files app and go to Downloads.
  3. Tap the MP3 to play it, or use the share option to send it to another app.

Most music players on Android scan the phone's storage and will list the new MP3 automatically, sometimes after a short delay.

What can you do with the MP3 afterwards?

Once the MP3 is in Downloads, it behaves like any other audio file on the phone:

  • Play it in your music player or straight from the Files app.
  • Share it by email, chat or a cloud drive. MP3 opens on almost any phone or computer, which is often the reason to convert in the first place.
  • Use it as a ringtone or notification sound. Many phones let you pick a custom sound from storage in Settings > Sound (the exact menu differs by manufacturer). Keep ringtones short; trim the video or recording before converting so the MP3 starts at the right moment.
  • Copy it to a car stereo or an older player with a USB cable or a memory card.

Keep the original file until you've played the MP3 and checked it sounds right. If you later want a different bitrate, convert again from the original rather than from the MP3, because every lossy conversion loses a little more detail.

How do you trim a video on Android?

Most gallery apps, including Google Photos and Samsung Gallery, have an editor with a trim tool. Open the video, tap Edit, drag the handles at the ends of the timeline to keep only the part you need and save a copy. A shorter clip converts faster and is more likely to stay under the limit.

Is it safe to convert files on Android in the browser?

With a converter that processes the file on the phone, the file doesn't travel to a server. Watch out for sites that ask you to install an APK, add a browser extension or allow notifications before you can download. A real converter gives you an .mp3 file and nothing else. If a page tells you your phone is infected or needs a cleaner, close it. The guide on picking the best MP3 converter lists more checks, and the iPhone guide covers the same steps on iOS.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a video to MP3 on Android without an app?

Yes. Open a browser converter such as Convertola in Chrome, choose the video, pick a bitrate and download the MP3. Nothing needs to be installed.

Where are MP3 files saved on Android?

Browser downloads normally go to the Downloads folder. Open your Files or My Files app and look in Downloads. The exact name of the app depends on the phone.

Why won't my voice recording convert?

Some recorder apps save AMR or 3GP files, which Convertola doesn't accept. Check the file extension, and if your app allows it, switch the recording format to M4A or AAC.

Is my file uploaded when I convert on Android?

Not with Convertola. The conversion runs in your browser, and the file stays on your phone.

Can I convert a voice note to MP3 on Android?

Yes. Save the voice note to your phone using the chat app's share or save option, then open the OPUS to MP3 page in your browser and convert it at 128 kbps.

What is the best bitrate for converting on a phone?

128 kbps for voice and 192 kbps for music or videos with music. Use 256–320 kbps only for lossless sources such as WAV or FLAC files.

Why does the conversion stop on my phone?

Usually because the phone ran low on memory or the browser was paused when you switched apps. Close other apps and tabs, keep the screen on and try again.

Can I convert files on an Android tablet or Chromebook?

Yes. The same browser converter works on Android tablets and Chromebooks. Choose the file from your Files app, pick a bitrate and download the MP3.
