Audio conversion uses FFmpeg through the single-threaded @ffmpeg/core 0.12.10 build, licensed under GPL-2.0-or-later. FFmpeg. ffmpeg.wasm.
MP4 is the most common video format there is: Android phones, GoPros, Zoom, video editors and messaging apps all produce it. This free online MP4 to MP3 converter pulls the soundtrack out of an MP4 and gives you an MP3 you can play in the car, put on a phone or drop into a podcast editor. Unlike most online converters, it does not upload your video. For MOV, WEBM or MKV files, use the video to MP3 converter.

How it works
How do I convert MP4 to MP3 on Windows 11, Mac, iPhone or Android?
The steps are the same everywhere because the converter runs in the browser. Only the way you pick the file and where the MP3 lands change.
| Device | Browser | Where to find the MP4 | Where the MP3 is saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 or 11 | Edge, Chrome or Firefox | Drag from File Explorer | Downloads folder |
| Mac | Safari, Chrome or Firefox | Drag from Finder | Downloads folder |
| iPhone or iPad | Safari | Browse files > Photo Library or Files | Files > Downloads |
| Android | Chrome | Browse files > gallery or Files | Downloads |
Windows 11 plays MP4 files, but File Explorer has no "convert to MP3" command. A browser converter is the quickest route without installing software.
Formats
Will converting MP4 to MP3 reduce quality?
Very slightly. The audio in an MP4 is almost always AAC, a lossy format. Converting it to MP3 compresses it a second time. At 192 kbps or higher, the difference from the original soundtrack is very hard to hear. Choose 128 kbps for speech, 192 kbps for most videos and 256 or 320 kbps for music videos with a clean soundtrack.
Basics
What is inside an MP4 file?
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a container. It stores video, audio, subtitles and metadata as separate streams in one file. The video is usually H.264 or HEVC. The audio is usually AAC, which file tools often label "mp4a", the code MP4 uses for AAC audio. That is why some people search for an "mp4a to MP3 converter": it is the same job.
An MP4 that contains only audio is normally saved as .m4a. If your file ends in .m4a, use the M4A to MP3 page.
How it works
How long can my MP4 be?
The limit is 150 MB per file. How many minutes that holds depends on the video's resolution and bitrate. An iPhone records 1080p at 30 fps at about 60 MB per minute in High Efficiency mode and about 130 MB in Most Compatible mode (H.264, often saved as MP4 when shared), according to the estimates in its Camera settings. That is one to two minutes. A compressed 720p MP4 from a messaging app holds far more. If your MP4 is bigger, trim it in your phone's gallery, the Windows Photos app or QuickTime Player, and convert the part you need.

What is the best MP4 to MP3 converter?
The best MP4 to MP3 converter for most people is one that works on the file you already have, without an upload or an install. Check for these four things:
- No upload. Your video should not have to travel to a server you know nothing about.
- A bitrate choice. You should be able to pick 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps.
- No installer or extension. A web page can convert an MP4 by itself.
- One clean download. The file you receive should end in .mp3, nothing else.
