Basics

What is a WMA file?

Image, video, music, audio and document file cards fanned out

WMA stands for Windows Media Audio. It was the default format when you ripped a CD with Windows Media Player for many years, so a lot of older music libraries are full of it. WMA files play well on Windows, but many phones, car stereos and music apps outside Windows skip them or show an error.

MP3 fixes that. It's the most widely supported audio format, so once your WMA tracks are MP3s, they play almost everywhere.

Formats

Which bitrate should I choose for WMA?

Converting from WMA to MP3 means decoding one lossy format and encoding another. A higher MP3 bitrate can't bring back detail the WMA file never had, but a very low one can add new artifacts. A good rule: match or slightly exceed the original bitrate. Many CD rips from Windows Media Player were made at 128 or 192 kbps, so 192 kbps is usually plenty.

Good to know

Protected WMA files

Some WMA files bought from older online music stores were locked with DRM. Those files are encrypted, and this tool can't decode them. If a file fails right away, check whether it came from a store or subscription service. Tracks you ripped yourself from a CD are not protected and convert normally.

Good to know

Lossless and voice WMA

WMA also came in variants, including WMA Pro, WMA Lossless and WMA Voice. The converter reads the audio inside the file and writes a normal MP3, so you don't have to know which variant you have. If a lossless WMA is your only copy of an album, consider keeping the original and adding the MP3 as a second copy.

Limits

What this converter does and doesn't do

  • It converts one file at a time, up to 150 MB.
  • It keeps the first audio track only. If a file has several tracks, the others are skipped.
  • It runs in your browser with ffmpeg.wasm. Nothing is uploaded to a server, and there's no account to create.
  • It can't open copy-protected (DRM) files.
  • The output is a single MP3 at the bitrate you choose.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it free to convert WMA to MP3?

Yes. There's no fee, no account and no watermark on the audio.

Are my WMA files uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser. It never goes to our servers.

Can I convert a whole WMA music folder at once?

Not at the moment. The converter takes one file at a time. For an album, convert each track in turn; the settings you pick stay the same between files.

Why won't my WMA file convert?

The most common reason is DRM copy protection from an old music store. A damaged file or one larger than 150 MB will also fail.

Will converting WMA to MP3 lose quality?

A little, since both formats are lossy. At 192 kbps or higher, most people can't hear a difference from the WMA original.

Does it keep the song title and artist?

The MP3 is named after your file, and you can change the name before downloading. Tags stored inside the WMA, such as album and artist, aren't guaranteed to carry over.
