Convertola is a free online MP3 converter that runs inside your browser: a file to MP3 converter for the videos and recordings already on your phone or computer. Pick a file, choose the quality, and download an MP3 that plays in any car stereo, phone, music app or editor. The conversion uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, so the file you choose stays on your device the whole time.

Which files can this MP3 converter open?

This MP3 file converter accepts 12 formats, one file at a time, up to 150 MB. It works as a file converter to MP3 for both families: from a video, it keeps the first audio track and drops the picture. From an audio file, it re-encodes the sound as MP3.

Good to know

Is this free MP3 converter safe to use?

A browser window with a file protected by a shield and padlock

Yes. The file never leaves your device. When you open the page, your browser downloads the conversion engine (ffmpeg.wasm, a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg). After that, the MP3 is created on your own computer or phone. Nothing is uploaded to Convertola, so there is no copy on a server to delete later.

Most sites that offer a converter to MP3 upload your file to their servers and delete it on their own schedule, for example after an hour. That is fine for a song, but less fine for an interview, a voice note or a recording of a meeting. A browser-based converter avoids the question entirely. Read our privacy policy for the details.

The page also has no extra download buttons, no installer and no browser extension. The only file you get is the .mp3 you asked for.

Formats

Which MP3 bitrate should I choose?

Start with 192 kbps. It suits music and speech, and it is the default. Use 128 kbps for podcasts, lectures and voice notes. Use 256 or 320 kbps for music from a lossless source such as WAV or FLAC.

BitrateBest forOne minute of MP3 (measured)
128 kbpsSpeech, audiobooks, voice notes960,931 bytes (0.96 MB)
192 kbpsEveryday music and video audio1,441,375 bytes (1.44 MB)
256 kbpsMusic on good headphones1,921,819 bytes (1.92 MB)
320 kbpsMusic from WAV or FLAC2,402,263 bytes (2.40 MB)

We encoded the same 60-second stereo clip at 44.1 kHz with FFmpeg 7.1 and the LAME encoder at a constant bitrate (CBR). With CBR, the size depends almost only on duration and bitrate: roughly kbps × seconds ÷ 8 = kilobytes.

How it works

How big will my MP3 file be?

About 1.44 MB per minute at the default 192 kbps, no matter what you start with. We converted the same minute of audio from ten different source formats. Every MP3 came out between 1,441,196 and 1,442,105 bytes.

Example128 kbps192 kbps320 kbps
3-minute song2.9 MB4.3 MB7.2 MB
30-minute lecture28.8 MB43.2 MB72.0 MB
1-hour podcast57.6 MB86.4 MB144.0 MB

The 150 MB limit applies to the file you choose, not to the MP3. A 150 MB video usually becomes an MP3 of a few megabytes.

Formats

Does converting to MP3 lose quality?

A settings panel with quality sliders and linked width and height fields

A little. MP3 is a lossy format: it removes sounds the ear barely notices to make the file smaller. From a WAV or FLAC at 256 or 320 kbps, most people cannot hear the difference. From a file that is already compressed, such as AAC, OGG or OPUS, you are compressing a second time, so stay at 192 kbps or higher for music.

One rule no converter can break: a higher bitrate cannot add detail that the original never had. Turning a 128 kbps MP3 into a 320 kbps MP3 makes the file bigger, not better.

Devices

Can I use this MP3 converter on my phone or PC?

Yes. It works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on any device that supports WebAssembly.

  • On iPhone and iPad

Open the page in Safari, tap Browse files, and choose a video from your Photo Library or a recording from the Files app. After the conversion, the MP3 is saved in Files > Downloads.

  • On Android

Open the page in Chrome, tap Browse files, and pick a video from your gallery or an audio file from your file manager. The MP3 is saved to your Downloads folder.

  • On Windows, Mac and Linux

Drag a file from File Explorer or Finder onto the converter. Long or large files convert faster on a computer than on a phone, because the browser has more memory to work with.

Good to know

What does this MP3 converter not do?

  • It does not download from links

It cannot fetch audio from YouTube, TikTok or any other website. It converts files that are already on your device.

  • It converts one file at a time

There is no batch mode. For a whole music library, a desktop tool such as FFmpeg or Audacity is a better fit.

  • It has a 150 MB limit per file

Trim long videos first, or use a desktop tool.

  • It does not edit audio

There is no trimming, volume adjustment or tag editor.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the MP3 converter

Is this MP3 converter free to use?

Yes. Converting a file costs nothing, and you do not need to create an account or sign in.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The MP3 is created in your browser with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your file stays on your device.

What is the best bitrate for MP3?

192 kbps is a good default for music and speech. Use 128 kbps for voice recordings and 320 kbps for music from WAV or FLAC.

Can I convert a video to MP3?

Yes. Choose an MP4, MOV, WEBM, MKV or MPEG file and the converter keeps the first audio track as an MP3.

Can I convert YouTube videos with this converter?

No. Convertola only converts files that are already on your device. It does not download anything from YouTube or other websites.

Why does my file fail to convert?

The file may be larger than 150 MB, in a format that is not on the list, damaged, or a video without any audio track. On phones, very long files can also run out of browser memory; try a computer instead.

How long does a conversion take?

Usually a few seconds to a minute. It depends on the length of the file and the speed of your device, because the work happens on your own processor.

Can I convert several files at once?

No. The converter handles one file at a time. Convert the next file once the first download is done.
