Basics
What is an AVI file?

AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is one of the oldest video formats on Windows. It's a container: a wrapper that holds a video stream and one or more audio streams. Digital cameras, screen recorders and older video editors saved to AVI for years, so many personal archives still use it.
The audio inside an AVI is often MP3, PCM (uncompressed) or AC-3. The converter decodes whatever is there and writes a clean MP3 file.
Why Convertola
Why extract audio from an AVI?
Smaller files
A few minutes of AVI video can take hundreds of megabytes. The same audio as a 128 kbps MP3 is roughly 1 MB per minute.
Listen anywhere
MP3 plays on phones, in the car and in podcast apps, with no video player needed.
Transcripts and notes
Many transcription tools accept MP3 but not AVI.
Formats
Which bitrate should I choose?
| Quality | Size per minute | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 128 kbps | about 0.96 MB | Speech, voice memos, podcasts |
| 192 kbps | about 1.44 MB | Everyday music listening |
| 256 kbps | about 1.92 MB | Music on good headphones |
| 320 kbps | about 2.4 MB | The highest MP3 setting |
If the AVI was recorded on a camera or phone microphone, 128 kbps is usually enough. For concert footage or music videos, use 192 or 256 kbps.
Good to know
Large AVI files
The browser limit is 150 MB per file. Older AVI files with light compression can be big. If your file is too large, trim it in a video editor first, or export a shorter clip, and then convert it here.
Limits
What this converter does and doesn't do
- It converts one file at a time, up to 150 MB.
- It keeps the first audio track only. If a file has several tracks, the others are skipped.
- It runs in your browser with ffmpeg.wasm. Nothing is uploaded to a server, and there's no account to create.
- It can't open copy-protected (DRM) files.
- The output is a single MP3 at the bitrate you choose.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is the AVI to MP3 converter free?
Yes. It's free, with no account and no watermark.
Does my AVI video get uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser, and the video stays on your computer or phone.
My AVI has two audio tracks. Which one do I get?
You get the first audio track. That's usually the main language or the original sound.
Why is the AVI file rejected?
The file may be over 150 MB, damaged, or not a real AVI. Also check that the video has sound; a clip with no audio track has nothing to convert.
How long does the conversion take?
It depends on the length of the video and the speed of your device. A typical clip takes a few seconds to a minute.
Can I convert AVI to MP3 on a phone?
Yes. The converter works in modern mobile browsers. Very large files run faster on a computer.
