How it works

How to convert an image

The same photo as an opaque JPG and a transparent PNG
  1. Choose an image

Select a JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, TIFF, BMP, or ICO file of up to 10 MB. The upload starts when you convert.

  2. Choose the output

Pick JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, TIFF, BMP, or ICO. For JPEG and WebP, set a quality from 1 to 100.

  3. Download the result

The download appears only after conversion finishes. The link stops working after 15 minutes.

Formats

Image converter by format

Each page accepts one input format and has the output preselected, with tips for that conversion.

Formats

Supported formats

Only these formats can be uploaded and produced. Other formats are rejected before conversion starts.

  • JPEG

Photographs saved as .jpg or .jpeg. JPEG has no transparency. The quality control applies, and the result is lossy.

  • PNG

A good choice for screenshots, graphics, and images that need transparency. PNG uses lossless compression, with an optional lossy color reduction.

  • WebP

Often smaller than JPEG or PNG, with transparency support. Current browsers can display it. Some older tools still expect JPEG or PNG.

  • GIF

A single still frame. Animated GIFs are rejected so frames are not dropped silently.

  • TIFF

A single-page TIFF, saved with lossless compression. Multi-page TIFF files are rejected.

  • BMP

An uncompressed bitmap. 24-bit and 32-bit BMP files can be read. The quality slider is not used.

  • ICO

A Windows icon. Output is a PNG stored inside an ICO, scaled to fit within 256 pixels.

Good to know

Practical details

  • File size

Each image can be up to 10 MB, at the dimensions of the file you choose.

  • Still images

The converter works with a single still frame. Export one frame when you want to convert part of an animation.

  • From your device

Choose the image on your phone or computer. Convertola converts that file and prepares the download.

  • After you convert

The download stays available for 15 minutes. The same network can start 8 conversions each minute and 40 each hour.

Good to know

Reduce an image to 100 KB, 50 KB or 20 KB

Many forms cap uploads by size. The live estimate shows the file size before you download, so you can adjust until it fits.

  1. Pick JPEG or WebP

Both have a quality slider. PNG stays lossless and is usually larger for photos.

  2. Lower the quality

Move the slider down and watch the size. Photos often shrink a lot before the change is easy to see.

  3. Reduce the dimensions

If it is still too large, type a smaller width. The height follows the original proportions.

There is no automatic target-size button: you choose the settings and the estimate confirms the result.

Good to know

Included with every conversion

  • No install

It works in the browser on a phone or a computer. The image is processed on the server.

  • Formats on the page

The page names the formats it accepts, the file size it takes, and how long the download remains.

  • Metadata is optional

The output drops location and other embedded metadata unless you choose to keep them. JPEG, PNG, and WebP can store that data. GIF, BMP, and ICO cannot, and TIFF keeps XMP only.

  • A private download link

The result is not published in a gallery. The link is random and expires.

Use cases

Uses for the image converter

These are the jobs the image tool is built to finish.

  • Fit a photo to a requested size

Type a width or drag the scale. While the lock is on, the height follows the original proportions, so a listing photo does not stretch.

  • Prepare a graphic with a clear background

Crop the spare margin, then choose PNG or WebP when the image needs transparency. JPEG fills that background in.

  • Send a lighter photograph

WebP, or a JPEG quality below the default, usually makes a smaller photo. The estimate updates before you convert, and the result is removed after 15 minutes.

  • Mirror an image

Use Flip horizontal to mirror a selfie or reverse text for a print transfer, or Flip vertical to turn a reflection the right way up.

  • Make a favicon or app icon

Crop a logo to a square and choose ICO. Larger images are fitted inside 256 pixels and transparency is kept.

  • Meet an upload form's rules

When a form asks for JPG under a size limit, pick JPEG, lower the quality or the dimensions, and watch the size estimate until it fits.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

These answers describe the converter as it works today.

Which image formats can I convert?

You can upload and download JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, TIFF, BMP, and ICO. Animated GIF, multi-page TIFF, HEIC, PDF, and video files are not accepted.

How large an image can I convert?

An image can be up to 10 MB. The converter works with the dimensions of that file.

Are my images kept?

The converted file is stored so you can download it, then deleted after 15 minutes. It is not added to a public gallery.

Will the converted image look the same?

JPEG and WebP are lossy at the quality you choose. PNG output does not add another lossy step, but it cannot restore detail lost by an earlier JPEG.

What happens to location and camera data?

They are removed unless you check Preserve metadata and location. JPEG, PNG, and WebP can keep location and other metadata. GIF, BMP, and ICO cannot store them. TIFF keeps XMP, not EXIF.

What if conversion fails?

Convertola names the problem, such as an unsupported file or a file that could not be read. A success message appears only when the download is ready.

Can I convert an animated image?

No. Animated and multi-page images are rejected so the result is not a surprise single frame.

Where do I choose the image?

Choose it from your device with the button on this page, then pick the output format and convert.

Does conversion require an account?

No. Convertola is free to use, and there is no sign-in.

How do I reduce an image to 100 KB, 50 KB or 20 KB?

Choose JPEG or WebP, then lower the quality and, if needed, the width under Dimensions. The size estimate updates as you change them, so you can download when it is under your limit. There is no automatic target-size button.

Can I mirror or flip an image?

Yes. Flip horizontal mirrors the image left to right, Flip vertical turns it upside down, and Rotate turns it in quarter steps. You can combine them with any output format.

Is JPG the same as JPEG?

Yes. .jpg and .jpeg are two extensions for the same format. Choose JPEG as the output to get a .jpg file.

Does the image converter work on a phone?

Yes. It runs in the browser on Android and iPhone as well as on a computer, and there is nothing to install.

Which languages are available?

The site is available in English, Español, Deutsch, Français, and Português. A language is added only when the tool and these pages are translated.
