Basics
What is an AMR file?
AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) is an audio codec made for speech on mobile networks. Many Android voice recorders, call recorders and older phones save to .amr because the files are tiny. There are two versions:
| Version | Sample rate | Bitrate range |
|---|---|---|
| AMR-NB (narrowband) | 8 kHz | 4.75 to 12.2 kbps |
| AMR-WB (wideband) | 16 kHz | 6.6 to 23.85 kbps |
Both versions focus on the frequencies of the human voice. That's why AMR sounds fine for speech but thin for music. The converter reads both.
Why Convertola
Why convert AMR to MP3?
Many media players, email apps and computers don't open AMR files. Transcription services, editing tools and messaging apps usually accept MP3. Converting gives you a file you can play, share or edit without hunting for a special player.
Formats
Which bitrate should I choose for AMR?
AMR keeps very little audio data, so a high MP3 bitrate only makes the file bigger. 128 kbps is the right choice for almost every AMR recording. The MP3 will be larger than the AMR, since MP3 at 128 kbps uses about 0.96 MB per minute, but it will play everywhere.
| Quality | Size per minute | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 128 kbps | about 0.96 MB | Speech, voice memos, podcasts |
| 192 kbps | about 1.44 MB | Everyday music listening |
| 256 kbps | about 1.92 MB | Music on good headphones |
| 320 kbps | about 2.4 MB | The highest MP3 setting |
Limits
What this converter does and doesn't do
- It converts one file at a time, up to 150 MB.
- It keeps the first audio track only. If a file has several tracks, the others are skipped.
- It runs in your browser with ffmpeg.wasm. Nothing is uploaded to a server, and there's no account to create.
- It can't open copy-protected (DRM) files.
- The output is a single MP3 at the bitrate you choose.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is the AMR converter free?
Yes. It's free, with no account and no limits on how many files you convert one by one.
Are my voice recordings private?
Yes. The recording is converted in your browser and is never uploaded. That matters for calls and personal notes.
Why is the MP3 bigger than the AMR?
AMR is extremely compressed for speech. MP3 uses a higher bitrate so it can play on any device, which makes the file larger. It does not improve or lower the voice quality.
Does it support AMR-WB?
Yes. Both narrowband (AMR-NB) and wideband (AMR-WB) files convert.
Can I make the voice sound clearer?
The converter copies the sound as it was recorded. It doesn't remove noise or boost speech.
How do I find the AMR file on my phone?
Voice recorder apps usually save to a Recordings or Sounds folder. Use your phone's Files app to find files ending in .amr, then choose one here.
