FLAC gives you perfect, lossless copies of your music, but not every device plays it. Many car stereos, older iPhones and iPods, some DJ setups and plenty of web forms want MP3. This free FLAC to MP3 converter makes a high-quality MP3 copy while you keep the FLAC as your master. The file never leaves your computer. For WAV files, use WAV to MP3.

Basics
What is a FLAC file?
FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) is an open format first released in 2001 and maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation. It compresses audio like a ZIP file compresses a document: smaller, but decoded back bit for bit. A FLAC is often about half to two-thirds the size of the same WAV, depending on the music. MP3 is a different kind of compression: lossy, much smaller, and universally supported.
Formats
Should I convert FLAC to MP3 at 320 kbps?
Yes, for music. FLAC is a lossless source, so it has full detail to keep, and 320 kbps is the highest bitrate MP3 offers. One minute at 320 kbps is about 2.4 MB. If space matters more, 256 kbps sounds nearly the same and is 20% smaller.
| Goal | Bitrate | Size of a 4-minute song |
|---|---|---|
| Best quality for car, phone or DJ use | 320 kbps | about 9.6 MB |
| Big library on a small device | 256 kbps | about 7.7 MB |
| Audiobooks or spoken word in FLAC | 128 kbps | about 3.8 MB |
Good to know
Can I convert 24-bit or high-resolution FLAC?
Yes. We tested 24-bit, 96 kHz FLAC files and they convert normally. The MP3 standard goes up to 48 kHz, so the audio is resampled during encoding. High-resolution FLACs are large, so check that the file is under 150 MB; a long album track at 24-bit/192 kHz may not be.
Devices
Can Windows 10 or 11 convert FLAC to MP3?
Windows 10 and 11 can play FLAC files, but File Explorer has no "convert to MP3" command. You can install desktop software, or open this page in Edge or Chrome, drag the FLAC in and download the MP3. On a Mac, which does not open FLAC in the Music app, the same steps work in Safari.
Formats
Will converting FLAC to MP3 lose quality?
Some data is removed, because MP3 is lossy. At 320 kbps, most listeners cannot tell it apart from the FLAC on normal speakers and headphones. Keep the FLAC: if a better format comes along, you can make new copies from the lossless original.
Limits
Limits of the FLAC to MP3 page
This page accepts .flac files only, up to 150 MB and one at a time. It cannot convert a whole album folder at once. For that, a desktop tool like FFmpeg or fre:ac is more practical. For other formats, use the main MP3 converter.

Can I convert 24-bit FLAC?
Yes. 24-bit and high-resolution FLAC files convert normally if they are under 150 MB.
Is FLAC better than MP3?
